...I've been rocking my dad's Alfa 156 SW with one of these :) Alfa I5 Turbodiesel.

First diesel I've driven on the road and I can see why people like them. Effortless acceleration up to normal driving speeds. However, as with all TD engines in stock format it falls a little flat as the revs climb. A remap would sort that out very nicely though (my friend's Peugeot 406 Coupe TD pulls cleanly to redline making power all the way).

However, by far and away the best thing about it is the hint of 5-cylinder warble. If you push it past 2500rpm you get an echo of Audi Quattro rally car. It's a diesel with character!

So, I've hatched a plan:

1. Take one 2.4l JTD inline 5

2. Remap to ~210bhp/300lb-ft

3. Affix a straight pipe past the turbo to release a little more rally-noise (like the little 500 Abarth, turbos will be all the silencing it needs)

4. Mount longitudinally in an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! shell

5. ???

6. Profit rolling around in a warbling I5 TD RWD Alfa GT-JTD pulling ~5s 0-60s and getting between 35 and 55mpg :)

What do you reckon?

What kind of Jag do you have?

I take it the remap doesn't have repercussions for reliability? That, and the power capacity of the drivetrain are the only things I can think of. Sounds good.

This reminds me, since you can swap a transversly-mounted 3-liter 24 valve V6 from a 155 into an Alfetta GTV by rotating it 90 degrees, could you also swap the Ferrari V8 from the 155's platform-mate Thema 8.32 into one?

Hey now. The only proper replacement for a 5 cylinder is a V10 (Touareg V10 swap anyone?).

...i think you're onto something! They made some prototype gtv8s back in the day with the 2.6l montreal engine so you should be able to wedge a v8 in there :)

Gtv8 by ferrari here we come!

As far as i can tell it doesn't. I'm never certain whh manufacturers don't have diesels mapped like that from the get-go, but i think it might be something to do with emissiobs legislation.

The transaxle can take 350rwhp max as far as i can find out :) might be a little close to the limit torque-wise, but that 350rwhp is with sticky track tyres and hard launches on the autocross track.

Worth a shot anyway :)

I picked this one up in great running condition for £1360 (haggled down from £1500). You can pick them up for anything above a grand in running order, with stunners sitting just above £2000 :) they're great value

That's fairly cheap. Apart from the maintenance, obviously.

You'd be surprised :) I've driven it for nearly a year now and so far the only thing above and beyond what I'd expect from a new car is a clutch slave cylinder that wore out (but at 150k miles that's not unexpected).

So far I've done two oil changes at £53 each, a wheelbearing at £167 but that was at a garage, two front shocks at £100 and the clutch slave at £40.

For a car in the latter part of its life, that's nothing :)
